Health has various dimensions such as physical, psychological, socio-cultural and spiritual. Of these, psychological aspect has been given paramount importance especially in psychiatric nursing, the reason being as beleived by the psychiatric nurses around the globe that psychological aspect affects all other dimensions of health and is also being affected by all the other dimensions . Therefore optimal health can be achieved through the balanced equillibrium of different dimensions of health.
Though the growth of psychiatry has taken the full circle; practically it is in its infancy stage. The impediments that amounts to this stunted growth are ignorance, prejudice, shame, guilt, discrimination, devaluation among the general public towards the malady of mental illness. In addition to these, there are other notable factors which predicts the future of psychiatry, namely emerging diseases, violence and riots, changing life styles, gender discrimination, sexual practices (gays and lesbians), incest, natural calamities, changing family structure, political upheavels etc.
The implications of these above mentioned factors bears a deleterious impact on both normal and abnormal individual. Thus the psychiatric nurse has to be currently updated with the past and present happenings in and around the world, which would enable him/her to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to both sane and insane.
